Hand Crank Sock Knitting Demonstration
Local artisan, Kathy Roletter, will demonstrate knitting beautiful socks on a vintage knitting machine.
Sunday March 8, 1-4pm 2020
Saturday, March 14, 11-4pm 2020
Knitting machines such as the one Kathy uses, were given out during World War I by the American Red Cross, in order to supply socks to the soldiers who were waging war in the trenches of Europe. The soldiers were constantly subjected to wet feet, resulting in inevitable foot diseases. The Red Cross provided hundreds of women across our country with a portable hand crank knitting machine and a supply of army drab color wool. The machine was theirs to keep, as long as they completed their socks. If the volunteer was busy with other duties, or procrastinated, the machine and the wool were sent to another willing volunteer. This country wide effort helped to supply much needed socks for our soldiers during the wars. During the Depression, the machines were used to knit socks for additional family income, and to supply the family with thier own socks.
Now, Kathy uses one of these same knitting machines to knit socks of glorious colors and patterns.
